I developed a procedure in order to recover, under certain conditions, the subsurface stratigraphy and EM velocity distribution from common offset Ground Penetrating Radar data sets. The Ph.D. research, in the field of Applied Geophysics, consisted in the application and improvement of this inversion algorithm, including:

  • Application to syntethic GPR data sets, in which the inversion results are compared with the initial model;
  • Application to glacier monitoring, where the algorithm is able to recover the density distribution and water content of glaciers, therefore repeated GPR surveys can be used to accurately estimate the mass balance;
  • Application to the study of asphalts, with the aim of improving road inspection and maintenance;
  • Development of an automated reflection picking method based on attribute analysis, in order to reduce the influence of the user on the inversion results;
  • Development of a method to accurately estimate the reference amplitude used in the inversion;
  • Study of the effects of free water in the subsurface on the picked amplitudes and the inversion results;
  • Study of the effects of the sampling rate selected during data acquisition on the picked amplitudes and the inversion results.
