Scientific Activity: 

I developed an iterative process to recover, among other quantities and under certain conditions, the stratigraphy and the radar velocity distribution in the subsurface from Common Offset Ground Penetrating Radar data sets. The research study, in the field of Applied Geophysics, involves the application and improvement of this inversion program, including: 

  • Further testing of the algorithm using advanced forward modelling, creating syntethic GPR sections from which the algorithm recovers the initial model;
  • Application in the study of alpine glaciers, of which the algorithm can also recover the density distribution and water content, through empirical relations, allowing us to record their evolution in time and estimate their annual mass balances more efficiently;
  • Application in the study of asphalts, with the aim of improving road inspection and maintenance;
  • Automation of the picking of reflection amplitudes and travel-times used in the inversion, by means of attribute analysis, in order to reduce the influence of the subjectivity of the user on the inversion results;
  • Study of the effects of the antenna's radiation patterns, in order to better estimate the reference amplitude used in the inversion;
  • Study of the effects of free water in the subsurface on the picked amplitudes and the inversion results;
  • Study of the effects of the sampling rate selected during data acquisition on the picked amplitudes and the inversion results.
